Pros And Cons Of Saliva Drug Test

Saliva drug test has been gaining popularity recently. This test is replacing most common tests such as urine and blood tests on various instances as they are less invasive. It is easy administering a swab drug test as it can be administered at any random time and also at any place. This test is generally used to determine if there was any drug consumed recently. The test popularly known as the oral fluid test is used to test drugs included in the SAMHSA-5 group.

Advantages:

The procedure that is followed in this test is very simple. A swab which looks more like a brush will be given to you. And all that is needed from you is to place it for a few minutes in between your lower cheeks and gums. Then put the swab in a vial when it gets completely wet. It will have to be submitted to the laboratory to conduct the test. This test helps in the detecting drug metabolites in the sample under consideration. Metabolites are nothing but derivatives of drugs which are found in the body even after the drug’s effect wears off. The advantages of this test are many. First of all, collecting a sample of saliva is lot easier when compared to collecting the blood or the urine. In addition to that, it is very difficult to substitute the sample with any other sample. Also, one will find it very difficult to adulterate the sample to manipulate the results. This is very easy in case of in a urine test. This test is preferred by many today as the test is non-intrusive and also do not require too much of privacy as compared to other test such as urine drug test.

Disadvantages:

There are certainly some disadvantages in the saliva drug test. Most important of all is the time frame in which the drug consumed can be detected is not very high which is possible in other tests. Also, historical drug usage cannot be detected by regular swab testing. It is possible to detect only those drugs that are taken 12 to 24 hours prior to the test. Another concern for most of the people when it comes to this test is the reliability. Although the results are perfectly reliable, some do not believe it. These tests help in bringing out the levels of drug concentration in the body. This test is relatively more expensive when compared to a urine test.
